A Message from the Founder

Welcome to the National Gratitude League!

Gratitude has risen to the top of the wellness conversation for over a decade now. It has been proven to increase the big three: Happiness, Health and Hope. There are so many Gratitude websites, why one more?

I asked myself a similar question before publishing my first book. Now, over a million readers later, I know that any idea inspired by Gratitude is worth sharing.

We’ve heard so much about the benefits of being grateful and appreciating, this is a time for ACTION.

When we say that gratitude is for everyone, we don’t just mean every essential worker, but also your spouse, your neighbor and your boss. When I was consulting and training for a large multinational corporation, I scheduled a meeting with the CEO. While waiting to see him, I struck up a conversation with his assistant.

“Has anyone ever given you a thank you note?” I asked. She pulled out a note she had received four years earlier from her boss.

When I met with him, I shared how much his card had meant to her. He was surprised. “Have you ever received one?” I asked. He pulled one out of his drawer.

“Last month, when you gave the assignment to your classes to write a thank you note to someone in the company, one of our 25-year assembly line workers gave me this card and that plant on the windowsill. The card read, “Thank you for making this a great plant.”

While saying “Thank you” to 8 people may just seem like a drop in the bucket, or a snowflake on a mountain, there’s one snowflake that, when it falls, will trigger the avalanche. Our 8 to Great team has been helping bring about that avalanche of love and connection for over 35 years.

We are moving toward the day when we can say that expressing and receiving Gratitude is a daily experience for the majority of people. We have seen that once an individual experiences the joy of spoken appreciation or an NGL card exchange, they’ll be hooked for life.

As Zig Zigler said,

“You’ve never met an unhappy person who was grateful, nor have you ever met a happy person who was ungrateful.”

We invite you to join us.  We’d love to hear your connection stories, your ideas for new NGL projects and products, and any new applications for the card sets that we haven’t thought of yet.

If you’re like me, you’ll never leave home without a card in your pocket so you can pull it out at a moment’s notice, because you never know who’s going to cross your path and bless your life next.

Happy Appreciating, Dear NGL Team Members! Remember that with every thank you, we’re winners, and in the Game of Gratitude, so is everyone else.

Blessings and Blissings,

8 to Great will take you from wherever you are in life and provide a springboard into a new level of well-being and joy. Whether for yourself or someone you love, 8 to Great is an investment that is sure to bless and bliss your world.

Our Why

…because feeling invisible or lonely doesn’t feel good, and has a variety of impacts on our mental and physical health. In 2020, the American Journal of Public Health found that 61% of Americans reported feeling lonely. Loneliness has been found to lead to anxiety, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and depression, as well as a leading cause of violence against others and suicide.

…because sharing gratitude and appreciation feels good. It not only raises the spirits of those who receive it, but has been shown to be a mood lifter and attitude shifter for those expressing it. When we feel good, we are kinder, more generous, more productive, more cooperative, more courageous, more open-minded, healthier and happier. What’s not to love about all that?

……because our mission at is to share with the world the 8-step process that the happiest and most successful individuals follow.  This project helps us spread an understanding of the power of High-Way 7: Gratitude for the Present.

Our Mission

The National Gratitude League (NGL) is a global movement inspired by the life-changing process of the 8 to Great book and educational programs.

Our mission is to inspire people of all ages to embrace appreciation as a way of life.

What is The National Gratitude League?

The National Gratitude League (NGL) is a global movement inspired by the life-changing process of the 8 to Great book and educational programs. Our journey began with our belief in the transformative power of gratitude and appreciation.

Below, you’ll find a list of people who are rarely thanked: postal workers, grocery store clerks, bus drivers, custodians, principals, school secretaries, nurses, farmers, coaches, etc. Review the list and decide if you’d like to become part of this global movement.

If yes, there are three options for joining the National Gratitude League:

  1. Walk up to 8 people you don’t often thank and say something like, Thank you. I appreciate you!” or something similar. This can be done over one week or one month.

  2. Hand out an appreciation card to 8 people (available at that says those words.

  3. Write a short thank you note to 8 people and deliver them.

Once you have completed the above with 8 people, there are
three ways to celebrate joining the League:

  1. Print out an NGL Certificate and have a witness sign it. (available at
  2. Proudly wear an NGL wristband (available at
  3. Share about one of your experiences on the  website.

It’s for kindergarteners to senior citizens. The National Gratitude League is for everyone!

Our mission is to inspire people of all ages to embrace appreciation as a way of life.

Appreciation brings an abundance of benefits at no cost to you but your time. Download our 40 Gratitude Games by clicking here. You’ll also have the option to purchase NGL thank you cards, wristbands or bring in an NGL speaker.
